I worked extensively in South Africa from 1994 to 1996 as a photojournalist. I arrived in South Africa in early 1994 to cover the first free elections in April 1994, going to work for the Durban Daily News, covering the township fighting around the Durban area. In 1995, I went to work for the Sunday Times newspaper covering a series of village massacres in the Natal South Coast area, and other political violence in the area. By 1996, I had tired of the political violence, and decided to join the Weekly Mail & Guardian newspaper to cover rebuilding, land use, and NGO issues in Natal. While I was at the Mail & Guardian, it was awarded the British IPD Best International Newspaper Award, and the Missouri Medal for Distinguished Journalism. |
